Five corners of Australia we know by heart

We don't try to cover the whole planet. These are the regions we travel through ourselves, argue about at lunch, and send our favourite people to.

Why these five

Depth over a dot-covered map

Anyone can sell you a flight to anywhere. We'd rather know five regions properly — the tide times, the table to book, the guide worth flying for.

Timing it right

When each region shines

Australia's a year-round country — you just have to aim at the right corner of it.

Summer · Dec–Feb

Tasmania and Melbourne at their best. Sydney's beaches hum — book harbour stays early.

Autumn · Mar–May

Golden light on the Great Ocean Road, harvest season in the wine regions.

Winter · Jun–Aug

Prime time for the Reef and the Red Centre — warm days, zero humidity, clear desert skies.

Spring · Sep–Nov

Wildflowers out west, whale season winding down on the east coast, jacarandas in Sydney.

Local knowledge

Things the brochures skip

Book the reef mid-week

Tuesday–Thursday boats run half as full. Same coral, half the fins in your photos.

Hobart = hungry, not just pretty

The best meals aren't in the waterfront strip — they're in farm sheds 40 minutes out. We'll book the car.

Sydney's best view is free

Skip the observation deck. The Manly ferry at golden hour beats it, and it costs a few dollars.

Destinations FAQ

Picking between them?

A few honest answers to the questions we hear on every first call.

Can't decide?

Most travellers combine two regions in one trip. Tell us your dates and we'll sketch the smart pairing.

Sydney and Melbourne work in 3–4 days; Port Douglas wants 5+ so the reef days don't feel rushed; Hobart deserves 4–5 with a Bruny day. We always flag if your itinerary's too tight.

That's our bread and butter. Sydney + Port Douglas is the classic two-stop; add Melbourne or Hobart with 10+ days. We route it so flying days don't eat your holiday.

Gold Coast wins for younger kids (beaches, theme parks, easy logistics). Teens love Sydney's harbour and the reef snorkelling. We'll match stays with proper family rooms.

November to April brings afternoon storms and marine stingers to reef country. It's lush and cheaper, but if the reef's the priority we steer you to May–October instead.
